Pastor Jeff’s Corner for December 2022: “The Church Body”

“Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not whether they be clergymen or laymen, they alone will shake the gates of Hell and set up the kingdom of Heaven upon Earth.” John Wesley

Baylor University’s Wesley House of Studies shares the above quote on their website. I believe it should be on the lips of every Methodist as we seek to fulfill the great commission Jesus gave us. In fact, our church body (also known as our membership) at the only Methodist Church in Clewiston, promises to be involved through; local and global missions; faithful worship attendance; discipleship that leads to spiritual maturity; the giving of their time and resources and sharing the Good News with others. These 5 tenets of membership are commitments we share as a covenant when we join our church.

We are a body committed to a mission. As the return of Jesus Christ becomes more imminent, our mission becomes more imperative. Please read the John Wesley quote again and then remember what God’s Word says about our mutual adversary. 1st Peter 5:8 reads: Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

Note the term “family of believers.” That’s us, fellow Christian’s! We should not be obsessed with the number of people in the pews but rather with the number of souls being led to personal faith in Jesus Christ. We should also concern ourselves with living a life modeled after Jesus, not a life that allows culture to dictate how we live. If you are sitting on the side-lines today, ask the Holy Spirit to direct your mind, heart and body to serve in this mission field assigned to us by Jesus Christ.

Are you part of the one hundred, on-fire servants, being transformed by the renewing of our minds in Christ and ready to “shake the gates of Hell” for Jesus?

Count me in!

God loves you and so do I,
The Church Body
