January 6th is The Day of Epiphany. What does epiphany mean? It comes from the Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “appearance.” In Christendom it specifically refers to the appearance of Jesus Christ to the world. What a grand entrance Jesus made. Just ask the shepherds!
Epiphany also marks the day we remember that the Magi, after being led by a bright star in the east, brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
These three kings were on a mission to find the baby Jesus. King Herod wanted to find the baby because he was ordained the King of the Jews. Herod had evil in mind for Jesus, and told the kings to return to him after they found the baby. But, in a dream before the kings were to return to Herod, they were told not to go. What Herod had planned for evil purposes would not thwart the plans of God.
We have to believe in and pursue God’s ultimate higher purposes for our church and for us individually as followers of Jesus Christ. As 2023 unfolds, please join me in a month long daily time of prayer for our church; our congregation; the mission Jesus has called us to; and that we keep Jesus as the main focus in our ministry as the only Methodist Church in Clewiston.
In closing, I share this Bible passage with you: Matthew 24:44 You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. Are you ready for His return? Let’s make 2023 a year that glorifies God through helping others embrace Jesus as Lord. Amen! God loves you and so do I,
Pastor Jeffr
